Fixing the “Cracked Top” Nightmare: Perfecting Round Corner in SketchUp
We’ve all been there. You’ve just installed the Round Corner extension (by ThomThom) to soften those sharp edges. You click the button, watch the magic happen... and then you flip the model over.
to see where edges are failing to connect. You can manually draw connecting lines (triangulation) to patch holes in curved surfaces. Change Border Settings : In the Round Corner parameters, try setting borders to sketchup round corner crack top
FredoCorner (Recommended): This is the newer, more powerful tool. It uses an improved algorithm that handles complex, irregular shapes much better than its predecessor. It includes a Repair button and parametric abilities, allowing you to edit or undo rounding if it creates a crack. To make the "top" look cracked, use the
- To make the "top" look cracked, use the Rotate Tool to tilt the broken face slightly downward.
- Use the Move Tool to slightly offset the broken geometry so it doesn't look perfectly aligned (simulating a break).
- Offset Distance: Increase this slightly. This pushes the rounding profile inward, reducing collision stress at the top center.
- Algorithm: Switch from "Sharp" to "Smooth" or "Bevel." For hard-surface models, "Bevel" often avoids cracks better than a true rounded curve.
- Subdivision Level: Lowering the number of segments can sometimes force a cleaner, simpler top seam rather than a crack.
