The Future: Will We Need Armv8 NEON Codecs Forever?
As of late 2025, the answer is yes. While Android has moved to Armv9 (which focuses on security and machine learning), it retains full backward compatibility with Armv8 NEON instructions. The big change is Android’s gradual deprecation of 32-bit app support (from Android 14 onward). This actually secures the Armv8 NEON codec’s future—because 64-bit is now mandatory, the codec will remain relevant. ARMv8 NEON custom codec is a specialized add-on
7. Important Notes & Limitations
- Custom codecs are not needed for H.264/AAC videos — the built-in decoders handle those.
- AC3/DTS support is legal gray area in some countries (patents). Use only for personally owned media.
- Android 11+ scoped storage: MX Player must be granted “All files access” for codec to read external media properly.
- ARMv8 NEON codec does NOT add: AV1 decoding (hardware-dependent) or VP9 profile 2 (requires OS update).
- Improved performance: Armv8 Neon codec allows for faster video decoding and encoding, resulting in smoother video playback and faster loading times.
- Power efficiency: The Armv8 Neon codec is designed to be power-efficient, which helps reduce battery consumption and prolong battery life.
- Wide format support: Mx Player Pro's support for Armv8 Neon codec enables playback of a wide range of video and audio formats, including popular formats like H.265, H.264, and more.
- MX Player (Free): This version comes with a built-in "FFmpeg" codec. Users rarely need to install a separate file because the app can usually handle the decoding internally or via a generic library.
- MX Player Pro (Paid): The "Pro" version is a paid, ad-free version of the app. Historically, the Pro version required users to download a separate Custom Codec zip file if they wanted to support certain formats (specifically AC3 audio) that were removed due to licensing issues.
- Download the
.zip file (e.g., MX_Player_Codec_ARMv8_NEON_1.18.0.zip).

- Scroll down and tap "Custom codec".
- Navigate to the folder where you saved the
.zip file. Select it.
- MX Player will extract the codec and prompt you to restart the app. Tap "Yes".
