Keunggulan metode ini:

  1. The Reality of Mortality: The text serves as a spiritual wake-up call. It vividly describes the pangs of death, the questioning by angels Munkar and Nakir in the grave, and the compression of the grave. The makna here is Tadzakkur—reminding oneself of the fleeting nature of the world (dunya) and the permanence of the afterlife (akhirah).
  2. The Concept of Barzakh: The book is famous for its detailed description of the Barzakh (the intermediate state between death and resurrection). For Pesantren students, understanding this helps cement the belief that death is not an end, but a shift into a different mode of existence.
  3. Motivation for Righteousness: While the text contains terrifying descriptions of hellish punishments, it balances this with detailed depictions of the pleasures of Paradise. The intention is to instill a balance of fear (Khauf) and hope (Raja'), motivating the believer to adhere strictly to Sharia.

Using manuscript analysis of a 19th-century salinan (copy) from the Tebuireng heritage collection, we argue that the makna system functions simultaneously as a tool of linguistic scaffolding, a mnemonic device, and a mechanism for preserving the primacy of the Arabic original. The findings have implications for understanding vernacular Islam in Indonesia, traditional authority, and the material culture of pesantren pedagogy. The Reality of Mortality: The text serves as
