Warning: Windows XP is obsolete and unsupported. Installing it on modern UEFI hardware can cause stability, security, and driver issues. Proceed only if you understand the risks.
Insert Installation Media and Restart: Place your Windows XP installation media into your computer and restart.
Prerequisites
- 64-bit (x64) edition of Windows XP (The 32-bit edition cannot be easily loaded by standard UEFI firmware). Note: XP x64 is actually Windows Server 2003 kernel-based.
- A modified boot loader (typically a derivative of the EFISTUB loader or GRUB2 chainloading).
- A GPT partition with a protective MBR.
C. Modify XP boot process (hacky, unstable)
- Use GRUB2 or rEFInd to load XP’s
bootsect.dos or setupldr.bin from a FAT32 partition, but XP will still crash on UEFI hardware due to missing ACPI/UEFI drivers.
- A modern UEFI PC (Intel or AMD).
- A USB Flash Drive (at least 2GB).
- A Windows XP ISO (preferably an "Updated" or "Black Edition" that includes SATA/AHCI drivers, or integrate them yourself using nLite).
- Rufus (for USB creation).
- The Secret Sauce: A specialized bootloader file. (For this guide, we will reference the DUET/REFIND method, commonly utilized in modified bootloaders like Grub4DOS or OpenCore modified for legacy OS support).
Part 4: Post-Installation – Drivers and Pitfalls
Even if you boot into Windows XP’s blue setup screen, you are not done. After the first reboot, you will face:
Scenario 2: Pure UEFI (no CSM) – Native boot impossible
If your motherboard has no Legacy/CSM option (common on 2020+ Intel and AMD systems), you have only two choices:
