The Franken-phone Experiment: Breathing Dragon Life into a Plastic Body

There is a special kind of irony in the smartphone world. We have $1,000 devices that browse Instagram sluggishly, and we have ancient $100 phones that, with the right software, fly like they were forged yesterday.

I installed Evolution X on this budget beast, and the results are mind-blowing. We’re talking about taking a device with just 2GB of RAM and turning it into a daily driver that looks and feels like a Google Pixel. evolution x redmi 6a

What is Evolution X?

Evolution X is a custom Android firmware known for its balance of Pixel-exclusive features and deep customization. It aims to provide a "Pixel-like" experience—clean UI, Google's design language, and signature wallpapers—while adding powerful tweaks for power users. For a low-end device like the Redmi 6a, this means getting a taste of Android 13 or 14, long after Xiaomi abandoned it.

4. VoLTE Check

If you can't make calls over 4G, dial *#*#4636#*#* -> Phone Information -> Turn on "VoLTE Provisioned." If the toggle is grayed out, your Evolution X build has the classic MediaTek bug. You may need to flash a "VoLTE Fix" patch via Magisk.

The Cons

  1. Hardware Limitations: The Helio A22 is a weak chip. While the ROM is light, opening heavy apps (Facebook, Chrome with 10 tabs) will still lag. Software cannot fix hardware limits.
  2. Battery Drain: Some Evolution X builds have higher idle drain compared to MIUI because they assume modern power management.
  3. Camera Quality: The stock MIUI camera had proprietary optimizations for the 13MP sensor. On Evolution X, you will use GCam (Google Camera) or the stock AOSP camera, which usually results in noisier photos unless you tweak settings heavily.
  4. The "Redmi 6a" Specific Bug: MediaTek chips are notoriously harder to develop for than Qualcomm. You may encounter the "ImsService" crash (VoLTE issues) on some builds.
