We are pleased to announce a significant update to our file conversion suite, specifically enhancing the DW2 to DWG converter. This update focuses on improving interoperability between legacy DesignCAD (DW2) files and modern AutoCAD-compatible (DWG) formats, ensuring your historical data remains accessible and editable in today’s industry-standard environments. Key Improvements in this Update
- Try opening the DW2 in DesignSpark Mechanical (older version 5.0) and export as STEP, then convert STEP to DWG using FreeCAD.
- Use a hex editor to check if the file is actually a renamed DXF or DWG (look for
AC10xxheader). - Contact the original file creator – ask them to re-export as
.stepor.dxf.
The most direct way to convert DW2 is using its native environment. Current versions of DesignCAD 3D Max

Method 2: Using the Drawing Recovery Manager (Official Autodesk Method)
If you are recovering from a crash, AutoCAD has a built-in tool designed to handle these temporary files automatically. This is the safest "converter" as it checks for errors.
