Doa Khatam Al-Quran is a central part of the Majlis Khatam Al-Quran
The Specific Wording and Recitation Style in Brunei
While the core Arabic text of the doa khatam is similar across the Muslim world, Brunei has its own distinct flavour. The recitation often follows the riwayat Hafs ‘an ‘Asim via Tariq al-Shatibiyyah, the standard qira’at (recitation style) in Brunei.
Typical format and elements
- Recitation completion: Often follows a congregational or individual khatam of the Qur’an (complete reading), sometimes organized as a tadarus (group recitation) during Ramadan.
- Doa (supplication): A formal dua asking Allah to accept the recitation, bless the reciter(s), grant forgiveness, increase iman, and bestow benefits on family, community, and the Ummah.
- Selawat: Recitation of salawat (praises upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) is commonly included.
- Surah al-Fatihah & last juz’ verses: Reciters may repeat key verses or Surah al-Fatihah for blessings.
- Al-Fatihah and Yasin: Sometimes Yasin or particular surahs are read for barakah.
- Qasidah or nasyid: In community celebrations, religious songs or nasheed may follow.
- Food and fellowship: Communal meals or light refreshments often accompany social khatam events.
The social aspect that follows is equally heartwarming. The ceremony usually concludes with a Majlis Santapan (feast), where traditional Bruneian delicacies such as Ambuyat, Kelupis, and various dry cakes are served. This transforms the event from a purely religious rite into a strengthening of Silaturahim (brotherhood and familial ties). It reinforces the concept that faith in Brunei is not isolated but shared and celebrated.
