Abstract This paper examines the Tamil film Anniyan (The Stranger), directed by S. Shankar, as a seminal work in Indian cinema that blends the psychological thriller genre with commercial masala elements. By analyzing the protagonist’s Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) through a lens of social accountability and mythological allegory, this paper explores how the film uses the "vigilante justice" trope to critique societal apathy in India.
However, the film also critiques this fantasy. Anniyan’s violence is indiscriminate, terrifying, and ultimately self-destructive. Ramanujam nearly destroys his own body and relationship with the compassionate Nandini (Sada) because of his inability to reconcile order with empathy. The film’s resolution—where a psychiatrist convinces Ramanujam to integrate his personalities—suggests that sustainable justice requires inner balance, not external terror. anniyan tamil movie with english subtitles watch online
