The Yaris was a 2006 model, with a 1SZ-FE engine and a 5-speed manual transmission. Tom had always been fascinated by the 1SZ-FE engine, with its compact design and fuel-efficient performance. He had read everything he could find on the engine, and was impressed by its reliability and durability. Remove valve cover & inspect gasket

9. Top End Overhaul Sequence (Brief)

  1. Remove valve cover & inspect gasket.
  2. Set engine to TDC compression (cylinder #1).
  3. Lock camshafts (use special tool or flat bar at rear of cams).
  4. Remove VVT actuator & exhaust sprocket.
  5. Remove timing chain tensioner (compressed & pinned).
  6. Remove camshaft bearing caps (gradually, in reverse order).
  7. Lift camshafts → remove timing chain.
  8. Remove cylinder head bolts (reverse order, 2 turns each).
  9. Remove cylinder head → inspect gasket & flatness.
  10. Lap or replace valves, check guides.
  11. Reassemble with new head gasket & TTY bolts.

: Approximately 68–70 hp (50 kW) at 6,000 rpm with 95 N⋅m of torque at 4,100 rpm. Key Technical Features VVT-i Technology

⚠️ Always use new cylinder head bolts. Oil threads lightly before torquing.

3. Technical Features

  • Cylinder Block: Made of lightweight aluminum alloy with cast iron liners for durability. The block is specifically designed to be compact and rigid to reduce noise and vibration.
  • Cylinder Head: Aluminum alloy head with a "pent-roof" combustion chamber design, which aids in efficient combustion and better fuel economy.
  • Valve Mechanism: Uses a timing chain for the camshaft drive (rather than a belt). This is maintenance-free under normal operating conditions, though tensioners should be inspected at high mileage.
  • Ignition System: Uses a Direct Ignition System (DIS) with individual ignition coils for each cylinder (Coil-on-Plug), eliminating the need for spark plug wires and high-voltage leads.
  • VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent): Note: Early variants of the SZ series may lack VVT-i, but later 1SZ-FE applications typically incorporate Toyota’s variable valve timing on the intake camshaft to optimize torque across the rev range.
